ABSTRACT:

Introduction: Obesity is associated with significant increases in several morbidities and chronic diseases including diabetes mellitus type 2, malignancies, and cardiovascular diseases. This leads to significant depression, disability, and eventually higher mortality. Obesity is highly prevalent across the world, including the Middle East, due to the current lifestyle and many other adding etiologies. Methodology: We conducted this review using a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, PubMed, and EMBASE, January 1985, through February 2017. The following search terms were used: obesity, prevalence of obesity, obesity in the Middle East, causes of obesity, management of obesity Conclusion: Obesity rates have been increasing over the last decades, especially in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries, leading to significant increases in comorbidities and chronic diseases. To achieve better prevention, it is essential to increase awareness towards obesity among individuals. Improved dietary intake with the consumption of healthy food is essential.
