Abstract :
The formulation and evaluation of lozenges involve the development of solid, disc-shaped dosage forms intended for slow dissolution in the oral cavity, delivering therapeutic agents locally or systemically. The process begins with selecting appropriate active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients to ensure stability, palatability, and effective drug release. Lozenges are typically prepared using techniques such as compression, molding, or hard candy preparation, depending on the desired characteristics. Key evaluation parameters include hardness, friability, uniformity of weight, drug content, dissolution rate, and stability studies to ensure consistent performance and shelf-life. Sensory evaluations are also conducted to assess flavor, texture, and patient acceptability. These studies aim to optimize lozenge formulations for improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance, particularly in managing conditions such as sore throat, cough, or systemic absorption of drugs through buccal delivery.
The formulation and evaluation of lozenges are crucial steps in developing an effective dosage form for local or systemic drug delivery via the oral cavity. Lozenges are solid, often flavored preparations designed to dissolve slowly when held in the mouth, allowing the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to exert its therapeutic effect.
