A CASE STUDY ON DIABETES MELLITUS AROUND KRISHNAGIRI DISTRICT

Abstract :
This case study explores the clinical presentation, diagnostic process and management of diabetes mellitus (DM), a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, action or both. The focus in on a type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patient, through aspects of type 1 diabetes mellitus are also briefly discussed foe comparison.
The patient a 52 years old male with a family history of diabetes presents with classic symptoms of increased thirst (polydipsia), frequent urination (polyuria), unexplained weight loss and fatigue. Upon diagnosis, the patient exhibits significantly elevated blood glucose levels, as feel as abnormal results from fasting plasma glucose (FPG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).
This study highlights the role of insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion in the pathophysiology of T2DM, in contrast to the autoimmune destruction of beta cells seen in T1DM. The management approach for the patient includes lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, as well as pharmacological interventions like metformin and sulfonylureas to address insulin resistance and promote insulin secretion.
The case also addresses the importance of continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels and the need for long- term management to prevent complications such as diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and cardiovascular disease. The case study underscores the importance of early detection, patient education, and adherence to treatment regimens for effective diabetes management and improvement in the quality of life for individuals living with this chronic condition.
This case study serves as a valuable resource for healthcare providers in understanding the multifaceted nature of diabetes management and the complexities involved in treating patients with this condition.
