Abstract :

Background: The comparison of urgent care versus emergency department (ED) outcomes for common geriatric complaints reveals significant differences in the effectiveness of managing conditions in older adults. The research indicates that while both settings aim to address the acute needs of older patients, the strategies and outcomes can vary significantly. The effectiveness of care in these settings is influenced by factors such as the type of intervention, the presence of specialized geriatric assessments, and the integration of care across different healthcare settings.
Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of each setting in addressing the unique healthcare needs of older adults.
Method: The study is a comprehensive research of PUBMED and google scholar from 1978 to 2024.
Conclusion: While urgent care centers can effectively manage common geriatric issues due to their accessibility and cost efficiency, understanding their role alongside emergency departments is vital for optimizing elderly care in the future. They offer a practical alternative for non-emergent conditions, but continuity of care and follow-up for chronic conditions must be prioritized. Combining urgent care with community-based interventions fosters a robust framework for addressing immediate health concerns while promoting long-term wellness. Specialized geriatric units in urgent care improve patient assessment and outcomes by employing tailored protocols and interdisciplinary approaches that meet the unique needs of older adults.
