FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF FAST DISSOLVING TABLETS OF THEOPHYLLINE

Abstract :

Fast dissolving tablets are modern approach that focuses on helping the tablets disintegrate faster in mouth without water. Asthma and COPD are major illness that millions of people are facing these days, hence to overcome this problem Theophylline is used as second line bronchodilator. Our study aims on formulating and evaluating fast dissolving tablets of theophylline using natural polymers as superdisintegrants. Natural polymers like plantago ovata and fenugreek mucilage are used to reduce the risk caused by the synthetic ones. They are non-toxic and biodegradable which are nature friendly. These polymers exhibit rapid swelling and water absorption that leads to fast disintegration and quicker drug release. Our project mainly focuses on using advanced approaches for dosage forms using natural superdisintegrants.
Along with formulating the FDT’s we are also focusing on evaluating them for better patient safety and convenience. It consist of pre compression (Angle of repose, Bulk density, Tapped density, Carr’s index, Hausner’s ratio) and post compression parameters (Weight variation, Thickness, Friability, Wetting time) to evaluate drug safety. The tablets were formulated along with other excipients that contributes to longer shelf life and stability of the tablet. Four type of formulations( F1 –F4) with different concentrations were formulated to check which formulation exhibits quick disintegration with faster drug release.
The results conclude that F4 formulation with high percentage of fenugreek mucilage showed shortest disintegration time with more drug release (98.9% in 25 minutes) when compared to F1, F2 & F3.
