UPDATES ON SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF SEMAGLUTIDE IN WEIGHT LOSS AMONG OBESE PATIENTS WITHOUT DIABETES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract :
Objectives: to conduct a critical assessment and provide an overview of the most recent research on Semaglutide’s safety and efficacy in helping obese individuals without diabetes lose weight.
Methods: 1323 pertinent papers were found after a comprehensive search across four databases. The search produced 511 publications after eliminating duplicates using Rayyan QCRI and screening for relevancy. Of these, 115 full-text articles were examined, and 5 of them satisfied the requirements for evidence synthesis.
Results: Less than half of the 27,620 patients in the 5 trials we examined were female (8143, 29.5%). Additionally, emaglutide has been shown to significantly lower cardiovascular event rates in obese patients, which may indicate possible cost savings associated with obesity-related health issues.
The drug has also emerged as an effective add-on treatment for post-bariatric patients, ensuring prolonged benefits of up to one year regardless of demographic influences. Semaglutide further increases exercise capacity and induces weight loss and improved physical function in heart failure patients compared to placebo. Additionally, it helps non-diabetic individuals at risk lose a significant amount of weight, which lowers the risk of serious cardiovascular events.
Conclusion: Semaglutide was found to be safe and effective for the management of obesity; its benefits transcend mere weight loss to an improvement in cardiovascular outcomes and the maintenance of weight loss post-surgery. The uniform efficacy across such a diverse range of patients makes this drug a potential key in the management of obesity and its related chronic diseases. Future studies will be required to look at deficiencies in the current body of literature, long-term safety, and optimization of dosing for maximum benefit. Clinically, Semaglutide may not only improve health outcomes for an individual but also reduce the healthcare burden of obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
