Abstract :

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprising deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a common and potentially fatal disease. We carried out a narrative review to assess the possibility of the diagnostic tests used for suspected pulmonary embolism, DVT. For clinical purposes, we estimated the range of pretest probabilities over which each test can accurately confirm or exclude pulmonary embolism. Advanced clinical practitioners are regularly faced with ruling out PE in patients who arrive with non-specific symptoms such as dyspnea and pleuritic chest pain, which can be quite mild and hence easily overlooked. PEs can be difficult to diagnose, especially in the elderly, because their symptoms might be confused with those of other, less serious illnesses.
