Abstract :

Objective: The purpose of our study was to find out the relationship amongst obesity and iron deficiency in Pakistan.
Study Design: An observational cross-sectional study.
Place and Duration: This study was conducted at Services Hospital Lahore for the duration of one year starting from November, 2019 to October, 2020.
Methodology: In our present study we included 240 patients in which 80 patients were normal weight,
80 patients were overweight and 80 patients were obese. We collected 5ml blood from all the patients. Transferrin saturation, serum iron levels, serum ferritin levels, total iron binding capacity and blood complete picture were performed by us. SPSS v.20 was use for collection and analysis of data.
Results: In our present study we included 240 patients in which 67 (84%) obese adults having iron deficiency. Out of 67 patients 29 patients (36%) had iron deficiency anemia and 38 patients (48%) had iron deficiency state. 64 (80%) overweight adults having iron deficiency anemia out of these 64 patients, 18 patients (23%) had iron deficiency anemia and 46 patients (57%) had iron deficiency state. 50 (62%) normal weight adults having iron deficiency anemia out of these 50 patients, 17 patients (21%) had iron deficiency anemia and 33 patients (41%) had iron deficiency state. Transferrin saturation and serum iron were low in obese and overweight (p-value= <0.001). Serum ferritin were high between obese and overweight than normal weight (p-value= <0.001).
Conclusion: According to findings of our study we conclude that iron deficiency anemia and iron deficiency state have higher frequency between obese individuals.
