Abstract :

Bābchῑ (Psoralea corylifolia L.) (PC) is a well-known medicinal plant used for skin ailment in Unani System of Medicine from very early days. This review article summarized the information in Unani literature, phytochemical and pharmacological activities of Bābchῑ. Many cited actions by Unani medicine were proved in phytochemical guided bioactivity studies. It has approx. 40 pharmacological actions including antibacterial, anthelminthic, antitumor, cardiotonic, cytotoxic, pigmentor, vasodilator properties and locally used for alopecia, eczema, inflammation, leucoderma and psoriasis.
An interesting observation is discussed that crude ethanolic extract showed antiviral activity against sever acute respiratory syndrome corona virus (SARS-CoV-2). It also shows anticoagulant, antiplatelet activity, antidiabetic, antidepressant, immunomodulatory and antifungal activities.
The possible cause of death in Covid-19 may be respiratory failure/disseminated intravascular clotting/deep vein thrombosis/ pulmonary embolism, The most common post Covid complications seen as anxiety and depression. The Mucomycosis (black fungus) is also seen in patients having debilitated immunity and diabetes mellitus. In the present review we have seen that the crude ethanolic extract showed antiviral activity against sever acute respiratory syndrome corona virus (SARS-CoV-2), antidepressant, anticoagulant, antiplatelet activity, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, antifungal activities are seen in Bābchῑ. This article will be useful in providing information for future research to explore role of Bābchῑ in the treatment and prevention of post Covid complications. Further studies are required to validate its role as therapeutic agent in Covid-19.
