23.ROLE OF CLINICAL PHARMACIST IN EVALUATING THE VITAMIN-DRUG INTERACTIONS

Abstract :

Aim: To evaluate vitamin-drug interactions in poly-pharmacy prescriptions prescribed to the patient in General Medicine and Gastroenterology departments of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Methodology: A Prospective cohort study was done on patients admitted in general medicine and gastroenterology of Maharaja Institute of Medical Sciences, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. Information regarding age, gender, diagnosis, patient present/past medical history and treatment were evaluated using structured questionnaire (CRF). Results: Total 100 patients were considered in accordance to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Out of 100 patients, 54 male patients and 46 female patients were identified to have vitamin-drug interactions in their prescriptions. There were total of 329 interactions in 100 cases among which, 86(26.13%) were of B1, 47(14.28%) were of B3, 43(13.06%) were of B5, 54(16.41%) were of B6, 16(4.86%) were of B9, 69(20.97%) were of B12, 10(3.03%) were of C, 3(0.91%0 were of D, 1(0.30%) were of K. Conclusion: Proper administration guidelines are needed to be implemented in the hospitals and patient counselling regarding the usage of vitamins , the beneficiary effect on proper usage in compliance to recommended doses, to create awareness about the interactions in the polypharmacy ,such that the incidence of Vitamin-Drug Interactions are reduced. Along with patient counselling, physicians should also be recommend for standard doses of vitamin with considerations of age, body mass, gender, and educate patients on taking vitamin rich natural diet .
