Abstract :
Referred to as the “Touch-Me-Not” plant, Mimosa pudica L. is a sensitive herbaceous species which has long been used in Ayurveda, Siddha, and other traditional medical systems to treat conditions like wounds, inflammation, vomiting, and skin conditions. Its botanical characteristics, geographic range, morphology, and phytochemical profile which includes the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, and phenolic compounds are thoroughly reviewed in this review. Its broad range of medicinal properties, such as antidiabetic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, wound-healing, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, diuretic, anticonvulsant, aphrodisiac, anti-ulcer, and neuroprotective effects, have been shown in recent pharmacological investigations. Numerous in vitro and in vivo experimental models have been used to validate these effects. Furthermore, toxicological evaluations show a high margin of safety, with no appreciable side effects seen at therapeutic dosages. The plant’s potential as a pharmaceutical is further supported by its low cytotoxicity and organ-protective properties.
Even with a wide spectrum of therapeutic potential, more mechanistic research and clinical trials are required to support its place in evidence-based medicine. Mimosa pudica is a promising candidate for the creation of secure and efficient herbal remedies in contemporary pharmacology, according to this review.
