Abstract :

The medicinal plant Phyllanthus niruri, also known as Chanca Piedra, is abundant in bioactive substances such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, which support its many therapeutic benefits, such as antiviral, anti-hepatotoxic, anti-lithic, and anti-hypertensive properties. It has demonstrated great potential in the treatment of HIV and hepatitis B. P. niruri is known to have potent antifungal action in addition to its antiviral qualities. Its extracts work well against fungus including Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, and Trichophyton rubrum, particularly those derived from ethanol and methanol. The plant’s antifungal properties include producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), rupturing fungal cell membranes, and preventing spore germination. Furthermore, P. niruri has proven to be effective against drug-resistant fungal strains, which makes it a promising option to be used in conjunction with conventional antifungal therapies.
