Abstract :

Oral health is integral to overall well-being, and natural formulations offer promising alternatives to synthetic oral care products. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a herbal mouthwash incorporating neem (Azadirachta indica) and clove (Syzygium aromaticum) extracts, known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antibacterial properties. The formulation was optimized with neem extract (2–5%), clove extract (1–3%), glycerin (10–20%), and water (70–80%). The mouthwash underwent in vitro and clinical assessments to determine its antimicrobial efficacy, anti-plaque potential, and safety profile. Results demonstrated significant inhibition of oral pathogens, effective plaque reduction, and gingivitis prevention. The formulation also exhibited breath-freshening properties and was well tolerated, with no adverse effects on the oral mucosa. Compared to conventional mouthwashes, the neem-clove mouthwash provided comparable, if not superior, antimicrobial activity without synthetic additives, making it a viable natural alternative. With increasing concerns about the long-term effects of chemical-based oral products, herbal formulations offer a safer and sustainable solution. This study highlights the potential of neem and clove as key ingredients in natural oral healthcare products, warranting further exploration through larger clinical trials. The findings suggest that this herbal mouthwash could be an effective, well-tolerated, and eco-friendly alternative for maintaining oral hygiene.
