Abstract :

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by groups of specific microorganisms. Periodontitis involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, which results in the formation of pockets between gingiva and tooth which finally leads to loss of teeth. The aim of the present study was to develop Doxycycline Hyclate microspheres for periodontitis and then it is incorporated in to Carbomer gel in order to increase biocompatibility, bio adhesivity, allowing adhesion to the mucosa in the dental pocket and finally they can be rapidly eliminated through normal catabolic pathways, decreasing the risk of irritative or allergic host reactions at the application site. Pharmaceutical technologists today are able to provide drug delivery systems with very precise control over drug release for a prolonged period of time, dominating the need for a frequent dosing and minimizing side effects thereby increasing patient compliance and comfort. In conventional mode of administration, many drugs do not reach the target area in the body in sufficient concentration because many are prematurely inactivated and excreted. This problem can be overcome by administering the drugs directly into the intended site of action with lesser dose.
