Abstract :
Transdermal drug delivery systems (TDDS) have gained considerable attention as an effective and non-invasive route for systemic drug administration. These systems facilitate the controlled and sustained release of therapeutic agents through the skin, offering advantages such as bypassing the gastrointestinal tract, minimizing first-pass metabolism, and improving patient compliance. Various strategies have been employed in the development of TDDS, including the use of patches, micro-needles, iontophoresis, and other advanced delivery technologies. This review paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of transdermal drug delivery systems, exploring their design, mechanisms of drug transport, and key advancements in formulation strategies. Additionally, the review discusses the challenges associated with TDDS, such as limited drug permeability, skin barrier resistance, and formulation stability, while highlighting future perspectives and emerging trends in the field. The integration of nanotechnology, stimuli-responsive systems, and Personalized medicine approaches is also explored to provide insight into innovative pathways for optimizing the efficacy of transdermal therapies.
