Abstract :
Cognitive impairment and dementia are growing public health concerns globally and in Saudi Arabia due to increasing life expectancy and aging populations. Early identification and screening in primary care settings are crucial for timely diagnosis and management. This systematic review examines existing literature on cognitive impairment and dementia screening practices among older adults in Saudi Arabia’s primary care system. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Saudi Digital Library for studies published between 2010 and 2025. Twenty-five studies were included, revealing limited but increasing attention to cognitive screening, variable screening tools usage, and significant barriers such as lack of provider training, low patient awareness, and insufficient resources. The review highlights the urgent need to standardize cognitive assessment protocols and enhance primary care capacity for dementia care.
