EXTRACTION, PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION AND IN-VIVO ANTI-ARTHRITIC ACTIVITY OF DIOSCOREA BULBIFERA

Abstract :

The present study investigates the extraction, phytochemical profiling, and in vivo anti-arthritic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of Dioscorea bulbifera leaves. The extract was obtained using a hydroalcoholic solvent system and yielded 12.5% w/w. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, carbohydrates, saponins, and diterpenes, while alkaloids and proteins were absent. Quantitative analysis determined the total phenolic content to be 0.461 mg GAE/100 mg extract and total flavonoid content as 0.875 mg QE/100 mg extract, confirming the presence of potent bioactive compounds. In vivo anti-arthritic activity was evaluated using the Freund’s complete adjuvant-induced arthritis model in rats. The extract, administered orally at doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg, significantly reduced paw edema in a dose-dependent manner, with effects comparable to the standard drug aspirin. These results suggest that Dioscorea bulbifera possesses significant anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties, potentially due to its rich flavonoid and phenolic content.
