Abstract :
Introduction: Tuberculosis is a major public health threat that has annihilated more of its infected subjects than any other infectious disease. A variety of factors influenced the decision of tuberculosis (TB) drug-resistant patients to continue treatment.
Objective: To assess factors contributing to poor compliance with anti-tuberculosis treatment among tuberculosis patients at a tertiary care hospital, Lahore.
Materials & methods: Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study design adopted for the research work. Structured questionnaires were used to collect demographic data and factors contributing to poor compliance. Study was conducted at Gulab Devi Hospital, Lahore for the period of six weeks. Total population was 150 TB patients.
Results: Total 109 TB patients enrolled in the study having age 18 years to 47 years old. Only 21.10% (23) study participants knew about the causes of TB while others 78.90% (n=86) didn’t know. 14.68% (n=16) study participants had knowledge and good attitude about the prevention of TB whereas 85.32% (n=93) didn’t had knowledge and attitude about it. 50.46% (n=55) reported severe side effects of oral medication; 30.28% (n=33) respondents revealed moderate/mild level of side effects and 19.27% (n=21) reported no side effects.
Conclusion: In conclusion, multiple factors contributing to poor compliance to TB treatment included low socioeconomic status, age, frequency of TB treatment, distance from a healthcare facility, lack of knowledge about the disease, mode of therapy, side effects of medications, lengthy treatment period.
Keywords: TB (Tuberculosis), patients, socio-economic factors, knowledge, healthcare facility, side effects etc.
