Abstract :
Pyridine is an important nitrogen containing heterocyclic compound which plays an important role in medicinal chemistry because of its various biological activities. This review summarizes the chemistry, synthesis, chemical reactions and pharmacological importance of pyridine derivatives. It highlights the reported antimicrobial, antibacterial, antitubercular, antiviral and anticancer activities of pyridine derivatives and demonstrates the importance of structural modifications of pyridine ring to improve biological efficacy. Special emphasis is given to the antitubercular potential of pyridine derivatives as several compounds have shown promising activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis including drug resistant strains. The review also provides examples of marketed drugs containing the pyridine ring highlighting its importance as a versatile pharmacophore in drug discovery. In general, the literature indicates that pyridine derivatives have broad therapeutic potential and continue to be useful scaffolds for the development of new and more effective medicinal agents.
