Abstract :
Topical hydrogels have gained significant attention as advanced drug delivery systems for the management of inflammatory disorders due to their high water content, biocompatibility, and ability to provide localized and controlled drug release. Their soft, non-greasy nature enhances patient compliance while minimizing systemic adverse effects associated with oral anti-inflammatory therapy. The selection of suitable polymers, penetration enhancers, humectants, and other formulation components plays a crucial role in determining the physicochemical properties and therapeutic efficacy of hydrogel formulations. This review summarizes the classification, formulation strategies, essential characterization parameters, and therapeutic applications of topical hydrogels in anti-inflammatory drug delivery. Recent advances, including nanohydrogels, stimuli-responsive hydrogels, and bioactive polymeric systems, are also discussed for their potential to improve skin permeation and treatment outcomes. Overall, topical hydrogels represent a promising platform for safe, effective, and patient-friendly topical therapy, with future developments expected to further expand their clinical and pharmaceutical applications.
