Abstract :
Pharmacognosy, the science of natural product-based drug discovery, has evolved significantly with the integration of nanotechnology. Herbal medicines, though widely accepted due to their safety and therapeutic efficacy, suffer from limitations such as poor solubility, low bioavailability, instability, and rapid degradation. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems offer promising solutions to these challenges by improving drug solubility, stability, and targeted delivery. Herbal nanoformulations such as liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, nanoemulsions, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs), and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have demonstrated enhanced pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. These systems enable controlled drug release, reduce toxicity, and improve therapeutic outcomes. This review highlights the principles, types, mechanisms, advantages, applications, challenges, and future prospects of herbal nanoformulations in pharmaceutical sciences.
