Abstract :

The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of Diflunisal-loaded microsponges incorporated into a topical gel for sustained drug delivery. Microsponges were prepared using the quasi-emulsion solvent diffusion method with Eudragit RS100 as the polymer. Different drug-to-polymer ratios were evaluated to optimize entrapment efficiency, particle size, and release behavior. The optimized batch (1:3 ratio) showed high entrapment efficiency, suitable particle size, and controlled drug release. These microsponges were incorporated into Carbopol 934 gel and evaluated for physicochemical properties such as pH, viscosity, spreadability, and drug content. In-vitro release studies using Franz diffusion cell demonstrated sustained drug release over 24 hours. Kinetic analysis indicated diffusion-controlled release following the Higuchi model. Stability studies confirmed formulation integrity with minimal changes over time. Overall, the developed microsponge gel showed improved control over drug release and reduced irritation potential, making it a promising system for topical delivery of NSAIDs.
